Iran executed a man Saturday over alleged ties to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and his participation in anti-government protests earlier this year, Iranian media reported.
Erfan Kiani was hanged after being convicted of charges linked to attacks on security forces and unrest in the central city of Isfahan, according to Iran’s judiciary-linked Mizan news agency.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency described Kiani as a “hired thug of Mossad” and said he had engaged in the destruction and arson of public and private property, spread fear and terror, and wielded a machete.
Tasnim said Kiani was executed early Saturday after his sentence was confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court and legal procedures were completed.
Mizan said Kiani had been convicted over alleged attacks on security forces in Isfahan in January and claimed he had been on a “mission for Mossad.”
The agency did not provide evidence for the claim.
Kiani is the latest in a series of executions in Iran following the war and nationwide protests.
Human rights activists have long said Iran convicts people in closed-door trials without allowing defendants to properly defend themselves.
There have recently been multiple executions of alleged spies, as well as protesters and people affiliated with an Iranian exiled opposition group.
