The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said the number of people killed during protests and related violence in Iran has increased to 5,459, as it continues to verify new cases despite a decline in nationwide unrest.

According to HRANA, at least 40,887 people have been detained across the country since demonstrations began. The agency said 208 members of Iran’s security forces are among those killed.

HRANA noted that it had reported a death toll of 5,137 a day earlier but updated the figures after confirming additional cases.

The Virginia-based organization said it continues to revise casualty and detention numbers as more information becomes available, even though protests have largely subsided.

Protests sparked by economic crisis, disputed official figures

Protests erupted on Dec. 28, 2025, led initially by shopkeepers at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar after Iran’s national currency sharply lost value and economic problems deepened. The demonstrations quickly spread to other parts of the country.

Violence intensified in the capital on Jan. 8, prompting authorities to impose internet restrictions.

Iran’s Martyrs and Veterans Affairs Foundation’s forensic body said earlier that 3,117 people, including civilians and security personnel, were killed during the unrest.

According to the statement, 2,427 of those deaths involved security forces and civilians allegedly killed by what it described as “armed terrorist groups,” while no details were provided for 690 cases.

Despite the differing official assessments, HRANA said it is continuing to document and verify incidents linked to the protests and associated violence.
