Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bekayi thanked Türkiye and other neighboring countries for their efforts to support negotiations, saying Tehran values the goodwill shown by regional states.
Speaking at a weekly news conference, Bekayi said countries in the region have expressed willingness to host talks and described those efforts as valuable.
“We thank all neighbors who have made efforts on negotiations, especially Türkiye,” he said, according to Iranian media.
Bekayi said Iran wanted the negotiations to be held in Oman, citing past experience and what he described as U.S. actions in June that disrupted talks.
“We wanted the negotiations to take place in Oman, where the U.S. had previously dismantled the negotiation table,” he said.
He added that Iran remains in constant dialogue with regional countries and said those states can play an important role in reducing tensions. Bekayi said Iran wants to protect its interests through diplomacy.
Commenting on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United States, Bekayi said Iran considers the U.S. to be its sole counterpart in negotiations.
“Our counterpart in negotiations is the U.S.,” he said, adding that responsibility for acting independently of what he called pressure-driven initiatives that harm the region lies with Washington.
Bekayi also said the political problems the U.S. faces in West Asia stem from its support for Israel’s actions in the region.
Responding to criticism that Iran is using negotiations to buy time, Bekayi said Tehran wants talks to conclude as soon as possible.
“The earlier negotiations conclude, the better it is for us,” he said, adding that the lifting of sanctions is very important for Iran. He said claims that Iran is negotiating to gain time have no meaning.
