Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday warned that failure to hold Israel accountable for its attacks against Iran would have repercussions that extend across the entire region and beyond.
Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Araghchi emphasized the need to hold both Israel and the United States responsible for what he described as violations of international law, including human rights and humanitarian law.
“The consequences of the U.S.-Israeli war of aggression would not be limited to any single country,” Araghchi said, according to remarks published by state-run Press TV. “The whole region, and beyond, will suffer.”
Araghchi condemned the recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them a “stark violation” of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement recognizing Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
“The U.S.’s subsequent involvement in this aggression by targeting Iran's peaceful nuclear installations has left no doubt as to the full complicity of the American government in Israel’s war of aggression against Iran,” he added.
The comments come less than two weeks after the conclusion of a brief but deadly conflict between Israel and Iran. The war began on June 13, when Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian targets, killing at least 935 people, according to Iran’s Health Ministry. Another 5,332 were reported injured.
In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone attacks that killed at least 29 people and wounded more than 3,400, according to figures released by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The conflict ended with a U.S.-brokered cease-fire that took effect June 24.
The 17th BRICS Summit, hosted in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, convened leaders and top diplomats from major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The gathering aims to promote global security, reform multilateral governance institutions, and enhance cooperation across the Global South.
Araghchi used the platform to urge BRICS nations to speak out against what he described as Western double standards and to support reforms that ensure greater accountability for violations of international law.
