Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Wednesday called the U.S. the “Great Satan” following an attack on a wedding ceremony in southern Iran, accusing Washington of repeatedly targeting civilians during the conflict.
“Minab school: children massacred. Lamerd sports hall: kids slaughtered. Kouhestak wedding: children killed with families,” Ghalibaf wrote on X.
“If a power acts like Satan, picks targets like Satan, and kills like Satan, it’s Satan,” he said. “Shields a junior Satan that does the same? It’s THE Great Satan.”
Iranian officials said a U.S. strike hit a residential home in Kouhestak, in Sirik County, where a wedding ceremony was taking place.
Before Iran’s retaliatory attacks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran would respond “with firmness,” describing the strike as part of what he called a wider pattern of U.S. attacks on civilians in Minab, Lamerd, Qeshm and other areas.
“The United States’ catalogue of atrocities against the nation of Iran is now complete,” Baqaei said, accusing Washington of using “deceptive justifications” for strikes it described as targeting military sites.
U.S. forces previously struck an elementary school in Minab on Feb. 28, when the conflict began, killing over 150 people, mostly children, and a sports hall in Lamerd, where at least 21 people were killed.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Wednesday that its forces struck the command post and accommodation of a U.S. commander at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
The IRGC claimed the missile and drone attack killed some U.S. personnel and destroyed drones and other facilities.
It said the strike was carried out in retaliation for the U.S. attack on the residential home in Kouhestak.
