The Israeli army said it carried out more than 600 airstrikes in southern Lebanon this week, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the military to intensify attacks.

In a statement covering operations in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, the army said the Israeli Air Force struck more than 600 targets in southern Lebanon that it claimed belonged to Hezbollah.

The announcement came despite a cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel. Israel has continued attacks and home demolitions in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has carried out attacks on Israeli forces, citing cease-fire violations.

Netanyahu ordered intensified Lebanon attacks

Netanyahu said May 25 that he had instructed the army to increase attacks on Lebanon.

The Israeli army launched intense airstrikes on Lebanon on March 2 and occupied several towns in the country’s south.

The Lebanese government said the number of displaced people in the country exceeded 1 million during that period.

The army also said demolitions were carried out in the Beit Hanoun and Khan Younis areas of the Gaza Strip.

In the occupied West Bank, the army said more than 60 Palestinians were detained during operations this week.

Cease-fire remains under strain

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 24 that a 10-day temporary cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel, which took effect on April 17, had been extended for another three weeks.

After a third round of U.S.-mediated talks between Lebanon and Israel on May 14-15, the cease-fire was extended for 45 days starting May 17, with a fourth round of talks planned for early June.

Despite the cease-fire, the Israeli army has continued attacks and home demolitions in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has carried out attacks on Israeli forces, citing cease-fire violations.
