The Israeli military said it struck an Iranian research facility linked to naval weapons in Tehran, as a series of loud explosions shook the capital late Saturday amid ongoing attacks.
An Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist in Tehran reported intense explosions overnight accompanied by a plume of black smoke, while another wave of blasts was heard for several minutes on Saturday evening, though it was not immediately clear what had been targeted.
The developments came as Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced their entry into the Middle East conflict by launching a missile toward Israel earlier in the day.
Israel’s military said it had hit the headquarters of Iran’s Marine Industries Organisation during a wave of overnight attacks across Tehran.
According to the military, the facility develops “a wide range of naval weaponry, including surface and sub-surface vessels, (and) manned and unmanned equipment.”
An Israeli military spokesman said attacks on Iran’s military industry had intensified and that “within a few days, we will complete attacks on all critical components.”
Explosions continued to be reported in Tehran as night fell, adding to concerns over escalating strikes in the capital.
An AFP journalist described the blasts as intense, while a resident said the previous night’s attacks were so severe that “it felt like all of Tehran was shaking.”
“I miss a peaceful night's sleep,” an artist in Tehran told AFP, adding, “We are powerless to change a government that kills, and we don't want this war either. We just want a normal, simple life.”
The latest strikes came as the conflict widened, with the involvement of Iran’s Yemeni allies raising concerns over disruptions to Red Sea shipping and compounding the economic impact linked to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
