The Fordo nuclear facility was hit during ongoing Israeli attacks, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported Friday.
Two explosions were heard near the Fordo plant, with two specific sites within the facility reportedly struck.
Israel launched a large-scale assault early Friday, deploying approximately 200 aircraft to target Iran’s nuclear program and long-range missile capabilities. The strikes killed senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists.
Israeli officials said the airstrikes hit 100 targets, including Iranian nuclear and military sites. Among those killed were leaders of the Revolutionary Guards, the armed forces chief, and top nuclear scientists.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the attacks and said the raids will “continue as many days as it takes.” Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a state of emergency in Israel..
In response, Iran vowed “severe punishment” and called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting to hold Israel accountable. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel of a “bitter and painful” fate over the strikes.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the attacks in a televised address, saying, “This barbaric action, which is contrary to all international obligations, confirms the criminal nature of the illegitimate Zionist regime that has built its existence on occupation, aggression and killing babies.”
Iran retaliated with roughly 100 drones against Israel, according to the Israeli military, which said “most” were intercepted outside Israeli territory.
Iran’s foreign minister labeled the Israeli strikes “a declaration of war” and urged swift U.N. Security Council intervention. Khamenei swiftly named replacements for the commanders killed in the strikes.
Internet restrictions were imposed across Iran, the communications ministry said, adding they will be lifted “once normalcy returns.”
