Kosovo’s parliament has elected Dimal Basha of the ruling Vetevendosje (LVV) party as its new speaker, ending nearly seven months of political deadlock. The vote unlocks the formation of a new government after repeated failed attempts left institutions stalled and delayed key economic and international programs.
Basha, a senior member of the ruling Vetevendosje (LVV) party, won 73 votes in favor, with 30 against and three abstentions in the 120-seat Assembly.
His election came after more than 50 failed attempts in previous sessions, where the initial nominee Albulena Haxhiu failed to secure sufficient backing due to strong opposition resistance.
The election of the speaker was a constitutional precondition for forming a new government.
With a speaker in place, Prime Minister Albin Kurti now faces a two-week deadline to form a governing coalition. If he fails to secure parliamentary support, the president may invite other parties to try or call snap elections.
Albanian President Bajram Begaj and Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Elisa Spiropali congratulated Dimal Basha on his election.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of political cooperation and institutional stability, stressing that Kosovo’s citizens expect effective governance after months of uncertainty.
