The Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to Washington are set to meet Tuesday in the U.S. capital in an effort to break a deadlock in U.S.-brokered negotiations between the two countries, a Lebanese official source told Anadolu on Monday.
Lebanese Ambassador Nada Mouawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter are expected to discuss developments in Lebanon and mechanisms for implementing a framework agreement reached in June, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Washington meeting comes after a new round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, originally scheduled to take place in Rome this week, was postponed until October.
Direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel began in April with a U.S.-sponsored meeting in Washington.
The talks have focused on a ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal, border issues, and prisoners and missing persons.
On June 26, Beirut and Tel Aviv signed a U.S.-sponsored framework agreement in Washington.
The deal provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese Army in areas vacated by Israeli forces.
Tuesday’s ambassador-level meeting will focus on developments in Lebanon and ways to implement that framework as the broader negotiations remain stalled.
