A loud explosion was heard in Damascus on Tuesday, echoing across the Syrian capital, AFP correspondents reported.
Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariyah television reported “a loud explosion of unknown origin in the city of Damascus,” while an AFP correspondent said he heard the blast while driving through the capital’s central Umayyad Square..
According to Syria’s official news agency SANA, the explosion resulted from a controlled detonation carried out by teams of experts in the Mezzeh area. The operation involved destroying remnants of the civil war era, including unexploded rockets and bombs.
The initial sound of the explosions caused brief concern among residents in Damascus.
