Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late supreme leader Ali Khamenei, survived the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, according to two Iranian sources cited by Reuters.
The report said Mojtaba Khamenei remains alive despite the strikes targeting the country.
Although he has never been elected or appointed to a government position, Mojtaba Khamenei has long been viewed as a possible future leader within Iran’s political system.
A 2008 U.S. diplomatic cable described him as “widely viewed within the regime as a capable and forceful leader and manager who may someday succeed to at least a share of national leadership.”
Ahmad Khatami, a senior Iranian cleric who is a member of both the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts, said the country is close to choosing the next supreme leader following Ali Khamenei’s death.
“The Supreme Leader will be identified at the earliest opportunity. We are close to a conclusion; however, the country remains in a state of war,” Khatami said in remarks broadcast on state television.
