Montenegro has reinstated visa-free travel for Turkish citizens, reversing an earlier suspension, but reduced the permitted length of stay from 90 days to 30 days, the government announced.

In a statement, the Montenegrin government said the decision aims to combat irregular migration and align national practices with the European Union’s visa policy.

Security and migration controls cited

According to the report published by Vijesti.me, the government noted improved cooperation between Montenegrin authorities and Turkish officials, alongside strengthened security and migration controls.

Under the new regulation, Turkish citizens may stay in Montenegro without a visa for up to 30 days.

Authorities emphasized that the visa-free regime could be reimposed if security risk assessments deem it necessary.

The government said the tighter visa and migration policy is intended to prevent irregular migration and ensure more effective monitoring of foreigners’ entry and residence.

Part of EU visa harmonization process

Officials added that the Interior Ministry and the Police Directorate have implemented all measures foreseen under decisions adopted by the National Security Council on irregular migration.

The move was described as part of a broader package of measures linked to Montenegro’s alignment with the EU visa policy.

In this context, visa regimes for some third countries, including Azerbaijan, are also expected to be brought into line with EU policies by Jan. 15.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to achieving full alignment with the European Union’s visa policy as part of its EU accession obligations.
