Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu targeted the United Kingdom as the first nuclear-armed “Islamic Republic,” while arguing that Israel would not allow Iran to become the second, according to Israeli media.

Speaking to Israeli Army Radio in the studio of a company working for the Likud Party’s election campaign, Netanyahu said the son and grandson of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill were friends of Israel.

Netanyahu said the two had come to Israel during the Six-Day War and supported the country through their reporting.

He then claimed that Britain had turned into an “Islamic Republic.”

“Someone had said that the first nuclear-armed Islamic Republic would be the Islamic Republic of Britain,” Netanyahu said.

“We are ensuring that Iran does not become another one,” he added.
