Russian President Vladimir Putin might travel to Miami for the G-20 summit in December 2026, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced.
It was previously reported that the United States intends to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Leaders Summit scheduled for December 14-15 at Trump's Doral golf resort in Miami, U.S. officials told the Washington Post (WP).
Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin confirmed on Thursday that an invitation had been extended.
A senior U.S. administration official told the Washington Post that no formal invitations had been issued but that Russia would be included. "Russia is a G-20 member and will be invited to attend ministerial meetings and the leaders' summit," the official said.
The State Department said Trump "has been clear that Russia is welcome to attend all G-20 meetings as the United States focuses on delivering a successful and productive summit."
Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, said he had not heard about the specific invitation but would not oppose it. "I think he should talk to everyone," he said of Putin, saying it would be beneficial for him to attend.
Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Pankin confirmed the outreach to TASS.
"There is an invitation to participate at the highest level," he said, adding that a decision on who would represent Russia had not yet been made and would be determined closer to the date.
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov said "Russia has participated in every summit at the appropriate level" and that "a decision on the format of our participation will be made closer to the summit."
Russia skipped in-person attendance from 2019, initially due to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequently because of its 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the ICC arrest warrant issued against Putin for alleged war crimes in connection with the conflict.
