Qatar announced Sunday that U.S.-Iran talks had started in Switzerland with the participation of Qatari and Pakistani mediators to discuss the implementation of the terms of an interim agreement between the two sides.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said the meetings, described as the “Lake Lucerne Summit,” were expected to lead to a comprehensive and lasting agreement within the framework of the memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran.
“Specialized technical and expert working groups have been established to negotiate the provisions of a final agreement covering all aspects of the Memorandum of Understanding,” Ansari said.
He said follow-up groups had also been formed to oversee the implementation of the memorandum and monitor progress toward the conclusion of a final agreement.
Ansari said the parties had committed to moving forward in the negotiation process in good faith.
He said committees established to reach a comprehensive and sustainable agreement would follow the progress made until the final signing stage.
The talks are being held with the participation of the U.S., Iran, Qatar and Pakistan.
Ansari said Qatar, as one of the mediating countries, holds a firm belief that dialogue and diplomacy are the best ways to resolve disputes.
He said Qatar would continue working with Pakistan and all concerned parties to create a positive environment that enables the negotiations to achieve their objectives.
Ansari praised Pakistan’s efforts as a partner and mediator in the process and thanked Islamabad for its close cooperation.
He also said Qatar appreciated the U.S. and Iran’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.
Ansari thanked Türkiye for helping create suitable conditions to move the process forward.
He also extended thanks to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and other friendly countries for their support.
