The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will reopen next week for two-way travel, the head of Gaza’s newly established transition body said Thursday.
Ali Shaath, who heads the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, announced the decision during the signing ceremony of the Board of Peace charter.
He also made remarks at the launch of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“I am pleased to announce the Rafah crossing will open next week in both directions for Palestinians in Gaza,” Shaath said.
Shaath described the Rafah border crossing as “a lifeline and symbol of opportunity,” saying its reopening signals that Gaza “is no longer closed to the future and the world.”
He said reopening the crossing marks a significant shift for Gaza, which has faced repeated restrictions on movement in recent years.
Shaath is a former Palestinian Authority deputy minister and now officially leads the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.
The White House announced Friday the members of a new technocratic committee that will oversee the transition of power in the Gaza Strip as part of Trump’s 20-point plan aimed at ending the conflict in the territory.
The reopening of the Rafah crossing was announced as part of developments linked to the launch and implementation of the Board of Peace framework.
