Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged U.S. President Donald Trump to make every possible effort to prevent the Middle East from sliding into a broader conflict during a phone call focused on regional tensions, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported Sunday.
The crown prince emphasized the need to prioritize dialogue to reduce tensions and pursue de-escalation that could pave the way for diplomatic solutions with positive outcomes, according to SPA.
He said all possible efforts should be made to achieve a truce and preserve the region’s security and stability.
Mohammed bin Salman warned that a wider regional conflict could have consequences for both regional and international security and stability.
The two leaders also reviewed existing areas of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations.
The phone call followed nearly two weeks of military strikes between the U.S. and Iran, during which Tehran targeted what it described as U.S. military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries.
Before SPA reported the call, Axios said Mohammed bin Salman had expressed concern to Trump about reported plans for new large-scale strikes against Iran.
Trump said late Saturday that he had canceled planned military strikes after Iran and other Middle Eastern countries requested time to finalize the framework of a peace agreement.
He said the proposed agreement would include the “Immediate, Complete, and Total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.
He also said Israel had joined the commitment to allow the diplomatic process to continue.
“Get to work, everybody, and get it done,” Trump said.
