A tanker in the Gulf of Hormuz reported an explosion and large splash in close proximity to the vessel off the coast of Oman on Saturday, the second such incident reported by the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) within roughly a day, though no damage or casualties were reported.
In a warning notice, UKMTO said it received a report from the tanker's master describing an incident approximately 21 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.
The master reported seeing a large splash and explosion in proximity to the vessel; no damage to the vessel had been reported at the time of the notice.
UKMTO said authorities were investigating and advised vessels to transit the area with caution and report any suspicious activity.
This marks the second UKMTO warning involving a vessel off Oman within roughly a day, following an earlier report of a tanker struck by an unknown projectile approximately 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, which damaged that vessel's engine room.
Khasab, like Lima, sits on Oman's Musandam Peninsula near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
No party has claimed responsibility for either incident, and neither UKMTO warning attributes the reported explosion or projectile strike to any specific actor.
