Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he was considering resigning from office within the next several months and running as a candidate for prime minister.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Belgrade, Vucic said he could leave the presidency in three or four months, or possibly earlier, and promised that any decision would be announced in advance.
“I plan to resign from the presidency, perhaps in three or four months, or it could be earlier,” Vucic said. “I will inform you, do not worry. It will not come as a surprise to anyone.”
Vucic said he had already begun collecting his books from the presidential office.
He added that he planned to donate 1,200 books that had been given to him during his time in office.
Vucic said candidate lists being prepared for upcoming elections would include younger figures and students.
He said an important political rally would be held on June 27, where he planned to deliver key messages and explain the movement’s future roadmap to the public.
Vucic did not provide further details about the timing of elections or formally confirm that he would become a candidate for prime minister.
His remarks indicated that a possible resignation from the presidency could come before the next stage of the country’s political campaign.
Vucic also announced that Serbia would hold a military exercise on June 28.
He said several new unmanned aerial vehicles would be displayed publicly for the first time during the exercise.
New defense systems would also be introduced, he added.
The planned exercise will take place one day after the political rally at which Vucic said he would present the road map for the period ahead.
