Several people were killed Tuesday when a train collided with a school minibus carrying children at a level crossing in northern Belgium, officials said.
Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that there were multiple fatalities among those aboard the bus following the collision in the village of Buggenhout.
Four people, including two children were killed when a train hit a school minibus in northern Belgium on Tuesday, Belgium PM said later.
"A tragic collision between a train and a school bus took place in Buggenhout this morning. Four people have been killed, including two children," Maxime Prevot wrote on X.
The minibus was reportedly carrying seven children and two adults, including the driver.
Several emergency response teams were deployed to the scene.
Authorities said there were around 100 passengers on the train, none of whom were injured.
Rail network operator Infrabel said the warning lights at the level crossing were red and the barriers were lowered at the time of the collision.
The operator added that the exact circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
Meanwhile, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday she was "heartbroken" by the crash between a train and school minibus.
"My deepest condolences go out to the victims' families and their loved ones. Today, Europe grieves with Belgium," the European Commission president posted online.
