International nuclear inspectors reported Wednesday that smoke was seen rising from Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant but confirmed no radiation leak occurred from the incident at Europe's largest nuclear facility.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the smoke posed no threat to nuclear safety at the plant, which has been at the center of international concerns since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.
"There was no impact to nuclear safety at the plant, no casualties were reported, and using IAEA monitoring equipment, the team members found no increase in radiation levels," the agency said in a statement.
IAEA inspectors conducting a walkthrough discovered evidence of fire damage, observing burnt trees near the facility's cooling towers on Tuesday. The team has launched an investigation into the incident as part of its continuous safety monitoring at the plant.
The Zaporizhzhia facility remains under Russian control, with IAEA personnel stationed there to monitor conditions. Despite Wednesday's incident causing no immediate nuclear safety concerns, inspectors continue to document daily military activity in the area surrounding the plant.
The ongoing conflict has repeatedly raised fears about potential nuclear accidents at Zaporizhzhia , prompting sustained international oversight of the facility's operations and security.
