Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said 370 dunams of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank have been opened for the establishment of a new illegal Jewish settlement.
Smotrich said on X that a new settlement named “Mishmar Yehuda” had been declared in the Gush Etzion area of the occupied West Bank.
Smotrich accused former Israeli military chief and Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot, former Defense Minister and Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Liberman, and Democrats Party leader Yair Golan of seeking to dismantle settlements and establish a Palestinian state.
He said the current coalition government, by contrast, was expanding land seizures in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In remarks on Aug. 28, Smotrich said he would extend settlement policies in the occupied West Bank to the Galilee and Negev, areas home to Palestinian citizens of Israel.
As part of his election campaign, he said he would “transfer” those policies to Arab-majority areas and seek to “Judaize” them.
