Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz disclosed that Tel Aviv attempted to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei but failed due to the Iranian leader’s deep underground concealment. Katz emphasized that Israel did not require permission from the United States to carry out such an operation.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Israeli Channel 13, Katz described the events during the recent 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran-backed forces, which ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Katz admitted, “We wanted to kill Khamenei but operationally, we did not find the opportunity.”
The Israeli minister claimed that Khamenei was aware he was a target and had taken extensive measures to evade assassination by severing communications with Revolutionary Guards commanders who were killed during the initial Israeli strikes. Katz stated, “He went very deep underground.”
Katz further warned that if Iran progresses with its nuclear program, Israel has secured a “green light” from the U.S. to launch new attacks. “I do not see a scenario where Iran can restore its nuclear facilities after our strike,” he added.
The recent Israel-Iran conflict escalated on June 13 with Israeli military operations targeting Iranian assets in the region.
