A tanker caught fire Monday after being struck by an “unknown projectile” in the Red Sea, about 63 nautical miles west of Saudi Arabia’s port city of Yanbu, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.
In a warning issued Aug. 24, the UKMTO said it had received a report of the incident from the vessel’s company security officer.
“The Company Security Officer reported a tanker has been struck by an unknown projectile causing a fire to the vessel on the main deck,” the agency said.
The agency said all crew members were safe and accounted for following the incident, with no environmental impact reported.
The UKMTO did not identify the tanker or provide information on the origin or type of the projectile.
The strike caused a fire on the vessel’s main deck, according to the report, but the UKMTO did not report any injuries among the crew.
The incident occurred off Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu.
The maritime agency advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution while transiting.
It also urged ships to report any suspicious activity as authorities continued to monitor the incident.
