The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an attack warning on Saturday after a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 6 nautical miles east of Oman.

According to UKMTO, the vessel was hit on its port bow in the latest maritime security incident near the Strait of Hormuz as U.S.-Iran peace negotiations entered their final stages.

The agency said the crew is safe, no environmental damage has been reported, and the tanker is continuing to its next port of call.

Investigation launched

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

UKMTO urged vessels operating in the area to “transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.”

The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Iran has maintained restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports since April 13 following the outbreak of the conflict that began on Feb. 28.

Negotiations since the Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in April have focused on reaching a permanent end to the war, reopening maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran’s nuclear program.
