U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran wants to reach a deal with the United States over its nuclear program but has not agreed to terms he considers necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Asked whether the two sides were closer to reaching a final agreement under a framework deal reached in June, Trump said Iran was willing to negotiate but was not prepared to accept the terms he believes are required.
“They want to make a deal, but they are not going to make the kind of a deal that I feel is necessary,” Trump said.
He reiterated that Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
“Look, we’re in there for one reason: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. You understand that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won’t have a nuclear weapon,” he added.
Trump also addressed Oman’s role in diplomatic efforts involving neighboring Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Asked whether he was out of patience with Oman, Trump said the country had not “behaved very well” but suggested the United States could deal with the situation.
“No, I don’t think they behaved very well, but we’d handle them very easily, just like we do other things,” Trump said.
Trump also threatened military action against Oman if it interferes with U.S.-Iran negotiations, while saying Washington is in direct contact with officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
“If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” Trump told Fox News when asked about Oman’s role in negotiations involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran said Saturday that it had reached an agreement with Oman on a shipping route map for the Strait of Hormuz after weeks of technical negotiations.
The Strait of Hormuz has been a key point of disagreement in efforts to reach a final U.S.-Iran agreement.
The waterway remains one of the world’s most strategic routes for energy supplies and global trade.
