Türkiye's Foreign Ministry on Thursday rejected a European Parliament resolution on Cyprus, declaring it without legal or moral standing and accusing EU institutions of applying an increasingly one-sided approach to one of the region's longest-running territorial disputes.

The ministry said the resolution contained "baseless and preposterous allegations against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces," and dismissed the text outright.

In its statement, the ministry described the resolution as "replete with despicable slanders" and characterized it as the latest example of what it called a "biased and distorted approach" by the EU and the European Parliament toward the Cyprus issue, attributing that stance to the influence of unspecified external circles.

Ankara also expressed concern that EU institutions were drifting further from what it described as historical realities and impartiality. "It is concerning that EU institutions are increasingly approaching the Cyprus issue in a manner that departs from historical realities and impartiality," the ministry said.

Ankara backs TRNC response

The ministry said it fully endorsed a separate statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which also responded to the European Parliament resolution. The TRNC, recognized only by Türkiye, has been a central point of contention in the Cyprus dispute since the island's de facto division in 1974, when Turkish forces intervened following a Greek Cypriot coup backed by the military junta in Athens.

The Cyprus issue has remained unresolved for decades despite multiple rounds of UN-sponsored negotiations. The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, and Türkiye have long held opposing positions on the path to reunification. Türkiye, which is not an EU member and has had accession talks effectively frozen since the mid-2000s, has consistently criticized EU bodies for siding with the Greek Cypriot administration in multilateral forums.
