Türkiye is continuing modernization and capacity expansion projects at customs gates along its border with Syria as reconstruction efforts in Syria and steps toward strengthening regional stability accelerate, Türkiye's state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) reported, citing information from the Trade Ministry.

During the first seven months of the year, 33% of construction work at the Yayladagi Customs Gate was completed. The project will expand the site from 17 decares to 23 decares and increase the number of platforms from two to four.

At the Karkamis Customs Gate, work has begun to construct permanent service buildings, while the existing 15-decare site is set to be expanded to 90 decares.

The Trade Ministry says modernization, capacity expansion and infrastructure investments at customs gates are intended to make trade easier and safer while improving the speed, efficiency and quality of border services.

Projects underway at 9 customs gates

Construction and project work is currently underway at nine customs gates across Türkiye.

Modernization work is continuing at the Yayladagi Customs Gate in Hatay and the Uzumlu Customs Gate in Hakkari, while work to expand the capacity of the Derecik Customs Gate is expected to begin by the end of the year.

Modernization projects are also being developed for the Derekoy, Cilvegozu, Oncupinar and Akcakale customs gates. Project preparations are continuing at the Cobanbey and Karkamis crossings.

Türkiye is also conducting land studies to increase the capacity of the Dilucu Customs Gate in Igdir in anticipation of increased trade and transportation traffic following the opening of the Zangezur Corridor, which is expected to strengthen the country's position as an energy and logistics hub.

Talks with Iran are continuing to determine the location where the planned Gelincik Customs Gate will be established.

Syria border crossings undergo capacity expansion

At the Akcakale Customs Gate, a 24-decare mined area belonging to the National Defense Ministry has been cleared as part of plans to expand the crossing.

Around 59 decares of land belonging to the Turkish Grain Board, or TMO, has also been allocated to the Trade Ministry. Zoning work is underway as part of a broad project to expand and modernize the customs gate across a larger area.

At the Oncupinar Customs Gate, zoning and project preparations for the construction of a service building are continuing.

The existing 21-decare area at the Cobanbey Customs Gate is planned to be expanded to 71 decares.

At Karkamis, alongside construction of permanent service buildings, the customs site's area will increase sixfold from 15 decares to 90 decares.

Infrastructure and superstructure work has meanwhile been completed at the Nusaybin Customs Gate, which currently operates as an inland customs facility. The gate will become operational as a border crossing if a customs gate is opened in Syria's Qamishli region.

Gurbulak modernization completed in April

The Trade Ministry has also completed modernization work at the Gurbulak Customs Gate, which reopened in April with 20 platforms.

Following the renovation, the site's area was expanded to 320 decares and the number of vehicle-scanning X-ray systems increased to four.

A total of 11 inspection platforms were also constructed, along with a control point for goods subject to inspections by the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry.

The upgrades are intended to allow customs and passenger procedures to be carried out more quickly, comfortably and securely.
