Türkiye and Jordan signed the first-term Joint Economic Commission (JEC) memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat said on Tuesday.

Bolat made the remarks during the Türkiye-Jordan Joint Economic Commission meeting held in Amman with Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub al-Qudah.

He described the meeting as a turning point in strengthening bilateral relations in trade, investment, and infrastructure after a long pause, announcing the signing of the first-term memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

'Comprehensive cooperation in multiple sectors'

“This memorandum includes concrete and constructive articles covering cooperation in many fields; from trade and mutual investments to contracting services, industry, agriculture, health, culture, and tourism,” Bolat said.

He added that both sides decided to develop new projects and programs in specific areas of cooperation during bilateral talks attended by deputy ministers.

The visit also included a Türkiye-Jordan roundtable meeting organized by the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK), where businesspeople from both countries met to discuss future collaborations. Bolat noted that a business forum would follow the meeting.

'New agreements and regional cooperation'

Bolat stated that the two sides plan to hold more frequent business visits, fairs, and investment programs. “In the upcoming period, we will sign many agreements in areas such as free zones, SMEs, organized industrial zones, standardization, education, health, scientific research, and agriculture,” he said, noting that these agreements are expected to be signed during mutual presidential visits.

Referring to the trade volume between the two countries, Bolat said Türkiye-Jordan trade exceeded $1.1 billion last year and reached nearly $1.5 billion in the first nine months of this year.

Bolat emphasized Türkiye’s readiness to expand cooperation with Jordan on a win-win basis and highlighted joint efforts in the reconstruction of Syria, Gaza, and the West Bank.

'Reviving historic Middle East transport corridor'

Bolat also said that both governments are keen to revive the historic Middle East transportation route through Türkiye, Syria, and Jordan following the establishment of a new government in Syria in December 2024.

“With this corridor, transportation and trade between Europe, the Gulf countries, and back to Europe through the same route will increase,” he said.

Bolat expressed satisfaction with Jordan’s willingness to strengthen ties in all fields, saying, “The Jordanian government’s courage and enthusiasm to enhance relations with Türkiye in every area give us great satisfaction.”

Later, Minister Bolat visited the Salt Turkish Martyrs’ Cemetery in the city of Salt to pay tribute to Ottoman soldiers who were martyred during World War I.
