Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani said Türkiye played a very positive and constructive role in efforts related to developments in Syria.
Speaking to local media at the Munich Security Conference, Barzani said Türkiye’s assistance and support were instrumental during periods of tension in Syria.
“I can say that Türkiye’s role was very positive, and without Türkiye’s help and support, many of the things accomplished today could not have been achieved,” he said.
Barzani said the KRG supports dialogue between the Damascus administration and the YPG and described Türkiye’s role in resolving the Syrian crisis as constructive.
He noted that he remained in constant communication with Türkiye during times of tension in Syria.
Referring to operations by Syrian government forces against the YPG in Aleppo, Barzani said Türkiye played a major role in ensuring the peaceful evacuation of people from the city.
“Türkiye’s role was very positive. They played a helpful role in reaching a joint agreement between the SDF and the Syrian government. From what I saw and observed, their role was very constructive,” he said.
Barzani said both sides may have different views on the agreement reached between Damascus and the YPG.
“If you ask Damascus, they may think they gave a lot to the Kurds (YPG). If you ask the Kurds (YPG), they may think they received very little. However, in my personal opinion, what has been done could be good for both sides,” he said.
Barzani said the KRG supports all components in Syria reaching a positive outcome within the framework of a unified Syria.
He added that measures concerning Rojava, northern and northeastern Syria, and other components should be reflected in the Syrian constitution.
Addressing views that the KRG model could be applied in Syria, Barzani said such expectations should be realistic.
“If we think that we can copy exactly the model we have in Iraqi Kurdistan and apply it in Syria, that would not be possible,” he said.
