Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remains committed to security stabilization and recovery in the Gaza Strip, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday.

Fidan made the remarks at the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, convened in Washington under the chairmanship of U.S. President Donald Trump.

He said that “after two years of human suffering, (a) ceasefire in Gaza has been achieved, thanks to President Trump's personal engagement and our collective efforts.”

“Yet the humanitarian situation remains fragile, and ceasefire violations continue to occur. A prompt, coordinated and effective response is therefore essential,” Fidan said.

President Trump on Thursday gathers allies to inaugurate the "Board of Peace," his new institution focused on progress on Gaza but whose ambitions reach much further. Around two dozen world leaders or other senior officials have come to Washington for the meeting -- including several of Trump's authoritarian-leaning friends and virtually none of the European democrats that traditionally sign on to US initiatives. Türkiye offers security and reconstruction support

“President Erdogan remains fully committed to Gaza's security stabilization and recovery. Türkiye has already been providing (an) immense amount of humanitarian assistance to Gaza,” Fidan said.

“We can also contribute meaningfully to the rehabilitation of health and education sectors, as well as the training of the police force. In addition, we are prepared to provide troops to the International Stabilization Force,” he added.

Fidan said Türkiye would continue to back U.S.-led peace efforts.

“Türkiye will continue to support your (Trump’s) efforts towards a just and lasting peace. We remain convinced that the foundation of such peace is a two-state solution. Let us work towards that objective for the benefit of all peoples of the region,” he said.

Funding pledges and humanitarian situation

Trump hosted representatives from around two dozen countries at the newly renamed headquarters of the former U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, which now serves as the venue for the Board of Peace initiative.

At the meeting, Trump announced billions of dollars in contributions for relief efforts in Gaza, saying the United States would provide $10 billion to the new body.

Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait have collectively pledged more than $7 billion, Trump said.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is raising an additional $2 billion, he added, noting that Japan has committed to host a major fundraising event.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Michael Waltz said humanitarian flows into Gaza have improved significantly, with 4,200 aid trucks entering the territory each week for 13 consecutive weeks.

“This is the longest stretch of high-volume assistance to Gaza in years,” Waltz said.

“Aid is up,” he added, saying assistance is now reaching Gaza’s entire population of 2.1 million people, up to five times previous delivery levels.

Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza on Oct. 8, 2023, killing more than 72,000 Palestinians and injuring over 171,000 others, most of them women and children, according to Gaza health authorities. About 90% of civilian infrastructure has been damaged.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli attacks have continued, killing at least 611 Palestinians and injuring 1,630 more, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
