Türkiye’s U.N. Permanent Representative Ahmet Yildiz condemned Israel’s continued attacks on Syria, saying they violate the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while welcoming the U.S. decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Speaking at a U.N. Security Council meeting on developments in the Middle East, Yildiz said Syria was making steady progress toward stability and described recent legal reforms in the country as an important step.
“Israel continues to undermine this positive trajectory through its reckless attacks on Syria and destabilizing actions,” Yildiz said.
Yildiz cited recent Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase as another example of what he described as continued Israeli aggression.
“We condemn Israel’s relentless attacks, which clearly violate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and target the country’s infrastructure and capabilities,” he said.
Yildiz said Israeli actions affecting civilians and destabilizing Syria must end and called on Israel to fully comply with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
He also urged the international community to use all available means to end Israeli attacks on Syria and what he described as Israel’s occupation of Syrian territory.
Yildiz also welcomed Washington’s decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
“We welcome the U.S. decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. We appreciate the constructive approach of the U.S. administration and congratulate the Syrian government and people,” he said.
Yildiz said the decision would give momentum to Syria’s economic recovery and reconstruction efforts while strengthening its position within the international community.
Yildiz said recent developments were vital for strengthening confidence in Syrian state institutions and advancing an inclusive political process.
He welcomed International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi’s recent visit to Syria and praised the Syrian government for its cooperation with the agency.
Yildiz called on the international community to continue supporting such developments, saying reconstruction, recovery and the rapid completion of the integration process were essential to achieving lasting peace, security and stability across Syria.
Addressing Türkiye-Syria military cooperation, Yildiz said Türkiye’s activities in Syria were not directed against any third country and posed no threat to them.
“Türkiye, which stood firmly with the Syrian people throughout 14 years of conflict, will continue to protect Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity and remain a supportive partner for everyone seeking to contribute constructively to lasting peace, stability and prosperity in the country,” he said.
