Two people have died in a forest fire that broke out on Greece's Salamis Island, officials said. According to a report by Greek State Television ERT, the bodies of two people were found today in a wooded area in the Peristeria region of Salamis Island, where the fire broke out.
Four other people were injured in the area. The injured were taken to Salamis Health Center. The fire also spread to homes in the area.
Strong winds in the area were reported to have made firefighting efforts more difficult.
Today at around 3:00 p.m. local time (12:00 p.m. GMT), forest fires broke out at two separate locations on Salamis Island, in the Peristeria and Selinia regions, prompting firefighting teams to begin operations both by land and by air.
Residents faced heavy smoke, and the Peristeria, Kolones, Dei Halioti and Perani regions were evacuated.
Greece has faced a wave of wildfires this summer amid ongoing 2026 European heat waves, with dozens of fires burning across the country in early July.
On Aug. 2, two people were killed when two firefighting helicopters collided near Athens while responding to blazes in areas including Porto Germeno, Psatha, Fokida, Megara and Kefalonia.
Thousands of people were also evacuated from Crete in late July due to wildfires that destroyed large areas of farmland, olive groves and residential property, with three firefighters reported killed in that period.
More recently, a wildfire broke out on the Chalkidiki peninsula on Aug. 13 near the resort town of Siviri, forcing the evacuation of 481 people, including tourists brought to safety by coast guard vessels and small emergency boats.
