Over 1.2 million Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned to Syria from Türkiye since 2016, with repatriations accelerating significantly following developments in Syria after Dec. 8, 2024, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Sunday.
The total number of voluntary returns has reached 1,213,620, with 474,018 Syrians returning home since Dec. 8, 2024, alone, according to Yerlikaya's statement on social media platform X.
"Voluntary returns have gained momentum following the developments in Syria after Dec. 8, 2024," Yerlikaya said.
"Since 2016, the number of Syrians who have voluntarily returned has reached 1,213,620 people," he added.
In his statement, Yerlikaya emphasized Türkiye's continued support for Syrian refugees during the repatriation process.
"Türkiye stands by our Syrian brothers and sisters in the voluntary return process, just as it did yesterday," the minister stated.
The interior minister highlighted that Türkiye's migration management operates under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, presenting what he described as an exemplary model to the world.
"Our country conducts migration management under the leadership of our president, (Mr.) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and presents an exemplary model to the world with its historical experience, humanitarian approach and rational perspective," Yerlikaya said.
The voluntary repatriation process is being coordinated by Türkiye's Migration Management Presidency, which continues to handle the returns with careful attention to detail.
"We continue to carry out the voluntary return procedures of our Syrian brothers and sisters with great sensitivity under the coordination of our Migration Management Presidency," Yerlikaya concluded.
