The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Central Referee Board (MHK) has announced a historic appointment for the 27th week of the Trendyol Super Lig. Asen Albayrak will serve as the center referee for the upcoming match between Goztepe and Alanyaspor on Saturday, March 14.

At 28 years old, from Ankara, Albayrak will become the first female referee to officiate as the center referee in a Super Lig match. Previously, female referees in the league have been limited to roles such as fourth official or VAR assistant.

A historic return of women to Super Lig officiating

Albayrak’s appointment comes 22 years after Lale Orta, the last female referee to officiate in the Super Lig, managed matches, the most recent being on May 8, 2004. Her debut as center referee is expected to inspire a new generation of female officials in Türkiye.
