Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after the national team's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 35-year-old midfielder made the announcement following Algeria's 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32, bringing an end to the Desert Warriors' World Cup campaign.
Speaking after the match, Mahrez confirmed that he had made his final appearance for the national team.
Mahrez concludes his international career with 119 appearances and 40 goals for Algeria, ranking among the country's most accomplished players. During his decade-long international career with the national team, he played a crucial role in Algeria's success, most notably securing the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Algeria advanced to the knockout stage after finishing third in Group J but saw its World Cup campaign come to an end with the defeat to Switzerland.
