Around 5,000 AS Roma supporters gathered across Rome's historic center on July 22, 2026, waving flags, setting off flares and chanting as the Italian football club marked its 99th anniversary.
AS Roma emerged from the 1927 merger of Fortitudo-ProRoma, Football Club di Roma and Alba-Audace, with first president Italo Foschi seeking to build up a Roman side capable of challenging Italy's dominant northern clubs.
The newly formed club adopted Rome's yellow-and-red colors and the Capitoline Wolf as its emblem, while Foschi formally set out its sporting, financial and administrative structure on July 22, 1927.
Campo Testaccio became the heart of Roma between 1929 and 1940, staging the club's first derby victory over Lazio and a memorable 5-0 win against Juventus that later inspired a film.
Roma secured its first Scudetto, the Italian league championship, in 1942 as Amedeo Amadei scored 18 goals and helped the club become the first team from outside northern Italy to lift the title.
After a 41-year wait, Roma claimed its second Scudetto in 1983 under Nils Liedholm, before narrowly missing out on European Cup glory against Liverpool at the Stadio Olimpico the following season.
Francesco Totti led Roma to a third Scudetto in 2001, while the club later lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho in 2022 and appointed Gian Piero Gasperini as head coach in June 2025.
Founded in 1927, the club has grown into one of the Italian capital's most enduring sporting symbols.
