Besiktas has decided to continue with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for now, despite being eliminated early from the UEFA Europa League by Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Norwegian manager's future will depend on upcoming Conference League and Super Lig matches.
Besiktas were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League in the second qualifying round after losing both legs against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. The poor performance triggered heavy criticism and put immediate pressure on Solskjaer’s position.
Following the second-leg defeat, Solskjaer addressed reporters:
"I believe I am the right person for this project. What we need is consistency. I will continue in my role," he said.
Besiktas president Serdal Adali showed support for Solskjaer before the match, stating:
"We began this journey with a long-term plan. Of course, the results will be evaluated, but we will not give in to manipulative criticism."
Although disappointed with the results, Adali is reportedly willing to give the Norwegian coach a few more games.
Besiktas is set to face Irish side St. Patrick's in the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round. In addition, the club's early Super Lig fixtures will also play a crucial role in determining Solskjaer's fate.
If Besiktas can eliminate St. Patrick's and start strong in the domestic league, Solskjaer is expected to keep his position. Otherwise, the club could begin searching for a new manager.
