Veteran striker Edin Dzeko announced his departure from Turkish football club Fenerbahce on Friday, ending a two-year stint with the Istanbul-based team.
The 39-year-old Bosnian forward confirmed his exit through a social media post, thanking the club and its supporters for their support during his time in Türkiye's top-flight Trendyol Super Lig.
"Leaving is never easy, especially when Fenerbahce has been like family to me," Dzeko wrote in his farewell message. "I want to thank everyone who has been like family to me for the past two years. My teammates, coach, staff, club and all the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes every day."
The striker, who wore Fenerbahce's captain's armband during his tenure, expressed particular gratitude to the club's passionate fanbase.
"A special thanks to all of you who always support us with such passion. You are the true heart of Fenerbahce and I will always carry you in my heart," he said. "Every day, in training and on the field, I gave my best. It wasn't enough to win the trophies we dreamed of, but I couldn't be more proud to wear such a historic and honorable jersey like Fenerbahce's."
Edin Dzeko played 99 matches for the Yellow Canaries, scoring 46 goals and providing 18 assists, directly contributing to 64 goals.
He joined Fenerbahce with high expectations due to his leadership qualities and professional demeanor, having appeared in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City in an Inter Milan jersey, despite his advanced age.
However, during his time in Türkiye, Fenerbahce failed to secure any championships or titles.
Fenerbahce responded to Dzeko's departure with their own tribute on social media, recognizing his dual role as both scorer and leader.
"Some players score goals. Some wear the armband. Edin Dzeko did both and provided leadership that very few could achieve," the club stated. "Thank you Edin, you will always be in our hearts."
Dzeko's departure represents the first major exit for Fenerbahce during the current transfer period. The experienced striker joined the team s in 2023 and became a key figure in the team's attacking lineup.
The announcement comes as Turkish clubs prepare for the upcoming transfer window ahead of the new season.
