Colombia beats Uzbekistan 3-1 in World Cup Group K opener

Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in their Group K match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The game took place at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Wednesday, with 80,824 fans in attendance.

Group K

Group K includes Colombia, Portugal, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan. Earlier in the day, Portugal and DR Congo drew 1-1 in Houston. With this win, Colombia leads the group, while Uzbekistan is at the bottom after the first round.

First-half lead

Daniel Munoz scored the first goal in the 40th minute, volleying in a pass from Luis Diaz inside the box. With this goal, Colombia continued its streak of scoring in every World Cup match.

Colombia kept up the pressure in the first half, creating chances on the wings while Uzbekistan struggled to defend.

Uzbekistan levels

Uzbekistan, playing in their first World Cup, tied the game in the 60th minute. Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored on a header after goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov stopped Eldor Shomurodov's volley, marking Uzbekistan's first World Cup goal.

Diaz seals it

Luis Diaz, who plays for Bayern Munich, put Colombia back in front in the 65th minute with a shot that Yusupov could not save. Diaz also hit the post during the match and finished with both a goal and an assist.

What's next

Colombia will play DR Congo next on June 23 in Zapopan, Mexico. They finish the group stage against Portugal in Miami on June 28.
