Canakkale will host its first Skoda Canakkale Gran Fondo on Sunday, bringing together 924 cyclists from 13 countries on a route across the province's European and Asian sides. Temporary road closures will be in place along the route.
The race will set off from Canakkale Cumhuriyet Square, where cyclists will head toward the GESTAS ferry terminal before crossing the Canakkale Strait by ferry to the European side. The long course will get underway from Kilitbahir at 10 a.m., while the short course will start from the Eceabat area at 10:10 a.m.
A total of 104 women and 820 men will compete in the event, with participants coming from Türkiye, Bulgaria, Russia, Greece, Romania, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Syria, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
After crossing to Europe, riders will pass through Eceabat, Kilitbahir and Alcitepe on the Gallipoli Historical Peninsula before heading toward the 1915 Canakkale Bridge. They will then cross the bridge back to the Asian side and ride toward central Canakkale, finishing at Cumhuriyet Square.
Temporary traffic restrictions will be introduced along parts of the course to allow the race to go ahead safely. The 1915 Canakkale Bridge will be closed to traffic between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., while closures will also affect sections including the Alcitepe-Kilitbahir Road, Edirne-Canakkale Road, Gelibolu South Junction, Umurbey Junction and Bursa-Canakkale Road.
In central Canakkale, Atikhisar Avenue will be closed from 12:50 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Ataturk Avenue from 12:55 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., and the Demircioglu Avenue-finish section from 12:55 p.m. until 3 p.m.
The event features two courses aimed at cyclists of different levels. The long route covers 112.75 kilometers (70.1 miles) with 834 meters of elevation gain, while the short route runs for 77.31 kilometers with 513 meters of elevation gain. Both routes take in the Gallipoli Historical Peninsula and include a crossing of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge.
Skoda is the naming sponsor, with Mosso and Shimano supporting as sponsor brands. The race is an official Turkish National Olympic Committee event and is being held with support from several national and local institutions.
