A digitally altered photo of former English footballer Wayne Rooney has resurfaced on social media platforms in Türkiye, prompting fresh speculation about his appearance. The image, which falsely depicts Rooney as significantly older with a heavy white beard and exaggerated facial features, was initially shared in September 2024 and has regained attention in recent days.
The photo in question shows Wayne Rooney seated in the stands during a Premier League match, labeled as “Plymouth Head Coach.” However, a reverse image search confirms that the original photo was first posted by Sky Sports Premier League’s official X account on September 29, 2024.
In the authentic version, Rooney appears with dark hair and a normal facial structure, not the aged and altered look circulating online.
The edited version was posted by an account named “El Ascenso” on Instagram, which describes itself as a source for “memes”—a term commonly used to refer to humorous or satirical internet content. This profile published the doctored image on Oct. 1, 2024, and its other posts also focus on entertainment rather than factual reporting.
According to reports in international media, the original image was captured during the Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur match held on Sept. 29, 2024. Rooney, now 39 years old, was seen watching the game from the stands.
He retired from professional football in 2021 and currently serves as the head coach of Plymouth Argyle, a team competing in the English Championship, the second tier of English football.
Wayne Rooney remains Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer, having netted 250 goals during his career. Since retiring, he has transitioned into coaching and has spoken publicly about gaining some weight post-retirement. In a 2022 interview, Rooney acknowledged putting on weight over the past year but made no comments about health issues.
