Fenerbahce defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 on Wednesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie, with goals from Anderson Talisca and Mason Greenwood securing a first-leg advantage for the Turkish club ahead of next week's return fixture in Austria.
The match, played before a home crowd at Ulker Stadyumu in Istanbul, Türkiye, kicked off at 9 p.m. and was officiated by English referee Chris Kavanagh.
Fenerbahce took the lead in the ninth minute when Talisca struck a left-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner, finishing off an assist from Kerem Akturkoglu. The goal came after an early let-off for the hosts, as Akturkoglu had a shot saved by Sturm Graz goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov just two minutes earlier.
Khudyakov proved a persistent obstacle for the home side for the remainder of the match, denying Mason Greenwood, Talisca and Kerem Akturkoglu on separate occasions in the second half alone as Fenerbahce pressed for a third goal.
Fenerbahce extended its advantage in first-half stoppage time. In the 45th minute, Greenwood curled a left-footed effort from outside the box into the bottom right corner, assisted by Marco Asensio following a corner kick.
The goal capped a first half in which the hosts had also seen efforts blocked from Nelson Semedo and Asensio.
Sturm Graz's best chance of the opening 45 minutes came in the 36th minute, when Jurgen Heil forced a save from Fenerbahce goalkeeper Mert Gunok with a left-footed shot from the right side of the box.
The match featured three yellow cards. Sturm Graz's Jon Gorenc Stankovic was booked in the 21st minute for a foul on Matteo Guendouzi, who had earlier required treatment for an injury.
Jurgen Heil was cautioned in the 58th minute for what the match record described as a bad foul, and Axel Kayombo, who had entered as a halftime substitute, was booked in the 65th minute after the referee ruled he had gone down in an attempt to win a free kick.
Fenerbahce also had to make an early change, with Jayden Oosterwolde forced off with an injury in the 30th minute and replaced by Archie Brown.
Sturm Graz introduced a wave of second-half substitutes, including Nelson Weiper, Gizo Mamageishvili and Ryan Fosso, in an attempt to find a way back into the match, but managed only a handful of efforts, including a blocked shot from Kayombo in the 77th minute.
Fenerbahce also rotated its lineup late on, bringing on Fred, Irfan Can Kahveci, Oguz Aydin and Mert Muldur, and continued to test Khudyakov, who saved efforts from Oguz Aydin and Talisca in stoppage time to preserve the clean sheet.
The match ended 2-0, with three minutes of second-half stoppage time played. Fenerbahce and Sturm Graz are scheduled to meet again next week in Austria for the second leg of the tie, with the winner on aggregate advancing toward the Champions League league phase.
