Fenerbahce has reportedly identified Vincenzo Montella as its leading candidate for the head coaching position following the departure of Ismail Kartal, according to a report by Turkish sports daily Fanatik on Tuesday.
The Istanbul club has begun searching for a new manager after Kartal stepped down following a 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray in the ninth week of Türkiye's top-tier football league, the Trendyol Super Lig.
According to Fanatik, Montella has emerged as the strongest candidate for the vacant position, although no appointment has been announced.
Fenerbahce's defeat away to its Istanbul rivals left the club six points behind Galatasaray in the league standings, intensifying questions over Kartal's future.
Amid speculation about his resignation, club President Aziz Yildirim and Cihan Kamer visited Fenerbahce's Samandira Can Bartu training facilities.
Approximately one hour after the visit, Fenerbahce officially announced Kartal's departure.
In its statement, the club said Kartal had informed the board of his decision to step down, which was subsequently discussed and accepted in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect.
Fenerbahce also thanked Kartal for his efforts, dedication and loyalty to the club while wishing him success in his future career.
With Kartal's departure confirmed, Fenerbahce has turned its attention to finding a replacement as it looks to move forward after the derby setback.
Fanatik reported that Montella is the frontrunner for the job, putting him at the center of the club's search for a new head coach.
