Former Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ilie Datcu, who won three league titles with the Istanbul club and still holds one of the longest-standing records in Turkish top-flight football, has died at the age of 89.
Fenerbahce announced Datcu's death in a statement, paying tribute to the Romanian-born goalkeeper who spent five seasons protecting the club's goal.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our goalkeeper Ilie Datcu, who successfully protected our goal for years and wrote his name into our history with the championships he won. We extend our condolences to the Datcu family, his loved ones, and the great Fenerbahce community. Your efforts for the striped jersey will never be forgotten, Datcu," the club said.
Datcu joined Fenerbahce from Dinamo Bucharest in the 1969-70 season and immediately set a record that has remained intact for 56 years.
He conceded only six goals across 30 league matches that season, establishing the record for the fewest goals conceded by a goalkeeper in a single campaign in the Turkish top flight, then known as the Türkiye 1. Ligi, now called the Super Lig.
Datcu went on to spend five seasons with Fenerbahce, winning three league championships as well as the Türkiye Cup, Presidential Cup and Prime Minister's Cup.
Datcu also made 13 appearances for the Romania national team before later moving into coaching.
In 1976, he briefly took charge of Fenerbahce as head coach, while between 2002 and 2005 he worked at Besiktas as a goalkeeping coach.
Datcu later became a Turkish citizen and took the name Ilyas Datca, maintaining a long association with Turkish football well beyond his playing career.
