Fenerbahce has named former player Dirk Kuyt as its interim coach through the next international break, the club announced Saturday, following the departure of Ismail Kartal.
Kuyt will take charge of the first team ahead of its Super Lig match against Goztepe. The club’s board met to discuss candidates for the permanent job before making the announcement.
"It has been decided that Dirk Kuyt will oversee the technical side of our first team until the break for international matches," Fenerbahce said in a statement.
The board is reportedly wary of committing to a long, expensive contract because the club is due to hold elections at the end of the season.
That makes a Turkish coach the more likely choice, though foreign candidates are also said to be under consideration.
Two names stand out for now: Aykut Kocaman and Abdullah Avci. Neither has received a formal offer, but both are reported to be keen on a job at Fenerbahce.
