Fenerbahce shares rose 10% on Borsa Istanbul on Thursday before paring back some of their gains after the club secured a place in the UEFA Champions League league phase and secured a guaranteed €18.6 million ($21.7 million) in UEFA prize money.

Istanbul side beat French club Olympique Lyon 2-1 away in the second leg of the playoff round on Wednesday, moving through 3-2 on aggregate after the first leg ended 1-1 in Istanbul.

The result ended an 18-year wait for Fenerbahce to return to the Champions League league phase, with the club last appearing at this stage in the 2008-09 season.

Knockout stages offer bigger payouts

The qualification puts further revenue within Fenerbahce’s reach, with the club’s total earnings from the competition potentially exceeding €40 million depending on its results.

Clubs competing in the tournament’s league phase earn €2.1 million for each win and €700,000 for each draw.

Further payments are also available as clubs progress through the knockout rounds. Reaching the knockout playoff stage brings €1 million, while direct qualification for the last 16 is worth €11 million.

The prize rises to €12.5 million for the quarterfinals, €15 million for the semifinals and €18.5 million for reaching the final.

European giants could await

The Champions League league phase features 36 teams, with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray entering the draw from Pot 3. Under the new format, each team faces eight different opponents, with two drawn from each of the four pots. Four matches are played at home and four away.

Yellow-Navy Blues could face European heavyweights including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Manchester United, Dortmund or Roma, while Stuttgart and Lens are among the tougher possible opponents from the other group.

The 2026-27 Champions League league-phase draw takes place Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. Türkiye time (GMT+3) in Monaco.
