FIFA has accused UEFA of running a "campaign of misinformation" in its bid to access documents related to Gianni Infantino's plan to sell parts of the World Cup to private investors, according to a court filing in Miami, Florida.
The filing, obtained by Sky News, seeks to block UEFA's request for all evidence tied to the now-abandoned scheme, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise. FIFA's lawyers wrote that "UEFA's conduct demonstrates that its application was made in bad faith and for the purpose of harassment."
UEFA has sought documents on the FFE scheme, arguing it could pursue a case against Infantino for criminal mismanagement. UEFA alleges Infantino undersold the tournaments for personal financial benefit.
FIFA's lawyers rejected that claim, stating, "With no basis whatsoever, UEFA suggests that Mr Infantino sought to profit personally from the FFE proposal."
FIFA says UEFA's bid to force it to hand over the documents is also an attempt to "influence" next year's FIFA presidential election. The vote is due in March, with UEFA having withdrawn its support for Infantino but not yet proposed an alternative candidate ahead of a nomination deadline in November.
In its legal submission, FIFA's lawyers said, "Just before FIFA's election, UEFA filed this application and three others spreading misinformation regarding Mr. Infantino." The filing adds that the court should reject any attempt to influence FIFA's presidential election on those grounds.
