Baris Gokturk, a former Fenerbahce Football Company Board of Directors member, announced he will run for president in the club's regular electoral general assembly scheduled for 2027, emphasizing the need for institutional reform over individual-centered management.

Speaking at an event organized by the Balikesir Fenerbahce Supporters Association, Gokturk outlined his vision for the storied Turkish football club, arguing that persistent leadership changes undermine the organization's long-term interests.

Presidential bid targets club's 120th anniversary

Gokturk framed his candidacy around Fenerbahce's upcoming milestone, stating his preparation is specifically for the 2027 general assembly, which will coincide with the club's 120th anniversary. He stressed that management boards should complete their full terms rather than face annual elections.

"Every year holding elections is not in Fenerbahce's interest. Administrations should complete their terms of duty," Gokturk said. "My colleagues and I are working on a permanent system that will illuminate Fenerbahce's future."

The former board member criticized what he characterized as the club's dependence on temporary successes during periods of financial abundance, calling instead for sustainable structural change.

Criticism of transfer spending and championship failures

Gokturk drew sharp comparisons to athletics and swimming to illustrate his point about the futility of near-misses in sports history. He cited sprinter Tyson Gay and swimmer Milorad Cavic as examples of exceptional athletes forgotten because they finished second to Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, respectively.

"History is merciless, it doesn't remember those who come second," Gokturk said. "Astronomical transfer fees, exaggerated salaries, and in the end, a Fenerbahce that still cannot become champion... I am tired of watching the same film."

He identified the club's fundamental problem as person-dependent management rather than institutional systems, arguing that Fenerbahce must transition to a corporate structure independent of individual personalities.

Gokturk clarified that unless extraordinary circumstances arise, he will not seek the presidency this year, focusing instead on preparation for the 2027 electoral cycle. Fenerbahce, one of Türkiye's most decorated football clubs, has experienced periods of domestic success but has struggled to achieve consistent championship results in recent seasons despite significant investment in player acquisitions.
